Autocar India August 2012-Issue: 156

This month we give you an exclusive road test of the all-new BMW 3-series and tell you why it is once again the leader of its segment. We also take a look at two new, more affordable Mercedes models, the A-class and B-class, that could be huge successes here in badge-conscious India. All this and more in the August 2012 issue of Autocar India:

  • BMW 3-series – The last 3-series was the car that BMW opened its Indian innings with and it’s been a strong contender ever since. But now there’s a brand new version, and we’re happy to report that, once again, it’s the class benchmark. Read our exclusive road test of the petrol and diesel versions of the new (F30) 3-series, as well as a three-way shootout against the Mercedes C-class and the Audi A4.
  • Hyundai Elantra – Forget the unexciting Elantra from some years ago, this one is a completely different animal. It certainly delivers on the Hyundai hallmarks of good looks and great equipment, but just how good is it to drive?
  • Mahindra’s mini-Xylo – The inside story on what should be one of the most interesting cars to hit the market. Part-MPV, part-SUV, part-hatchback, Mahindra’s sub-four-metre Xylo has more than a few tricks up its sleeve.
  • Renault Duster – Our first impressions of the Duster last month were very good, but now we’ve given it the full road test treatment to see if it can actually be all the SUV you really need.
  • Mercedes-Benz B-class – The next big thing from Mercedes for the Indian market is actually quite small, and we’ve managed to get some time behind its wheel in Pune this month. It’s spacious, comfortable, and definitely a Benz, but will it work here?
  • Mercedes-Benz A-class – It may still be a while away from the Indian market, but in many ways the A-class is an even more tempting package than the B-class. It takes the brand in a whole new direction, and it truly is a class apart.
  • Bajaj Pulsar 200NS vs KTM 200 Duke – The two best 200cc streetbikes in the country right now just happen to come from the same stable. But which one is right for you? We’ve put them head to head this month to help you decide.
  • Piaggio Vespa LX125 – Much like how BMW brought back the Mini, Piaggio has brought back the iconic Vespa scooter as a modern 125cc scooter clad in a retro-chic suit. We’ve done a full road test to highlight some of the substance on this stylish scooter.
  • Mahindra Great Escape – We love a bit of mud-plugging here at Autocar India, and so we decided to enter our long-term Thar CRDe in this year’s Lonavala leg of Mahindra’s popular off-roading experience. Needless to say we returned with big smiles on our mud-caked faces.
  • McLaren Technology Centre – Is it a factory or a laboratory? Even as you walk through its pristine white hallways it’s hard to tell. But this is where McLaren’s sports and racing cars are developed and built, and it is truly a magical place.
  • Motorsport – This was a busy month for motorsport. There was the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which saw its first hybrid-car victor, and the British GP weekend, whose myriad weather caught both fans and teams off-guard. We also stopped by the Goodwood Festival of Speed to watch several generations of motorsport come together at one place.
  • FREE 36-page booklet – The Driver’s Bible, our complete guide to looking after your car and driving it safely and enjoyably, is free with this issue.

Italia, Italia! Nothing ever changes

Drawing away from the dominance of the I-League dictated states, the 66th National football championship depicted a parable of extraordinary efforts as two teams, long accustomed to mediocrity, leapt out of the annals of oblivion, writes Amitabha Das Sharma.

A big boost ahead of the Olympics
The expectations of an Olympic medal have obviously risen from Saina Nehwal following her victories in the Thailand Open and the Indonesian Open. How she copes with the mounting expectations and the expected opposition from the Chinese brigade remains to be seen. One hopes the lessons learnt from the Beijing Games take Saina to a new high in London, writes Rakesh Rao.

Racism rages on

A cause for concern

England needs to conquer sub-continent
England won the three-Test series against West Indies 2-0 and remained on top, but only just with 117 points. South Africa hovers dangerously close at 116. This perhaps is a strong hint that there is no space for monopoly in the cricketing world today. No longer may we see the kind of ‘we-will-knock-you-down' trait that the West Indies and Australia had during their respective decades of dominance. Over to K. C. Vijaya Kumar.

Autocar India Magazine-Issue: 155 | July 2012

In this issue, we drive Renault’s new soft-roader, take a Jaguar to the desert, road test one of the fastest saloons on the planet and revisit the world’s first ever mid-engined supercar. Here’s what’s in store for the July 2012 issue of Autocar India:

  • Renault Duster – The Duster promises a great blend of ruggedness and practicality, and is likely to have a knock-out price too. It could very well be the car that turns the tide of Renault’s fortunes in the Indian market, and we take a spin to find out what it’s all about.
  • BMW M5 – Supercars and Indian road infrastructure don’t generally mix, but BMW may have just delivered the exception with the M5. The latest version of the original super-saloon is an uncannily brilliant combination of practicality and lunacy, and we give it the full road test.
  • Chevrolet Cruze update – The last thing the Cruze needed was more power, but this engine upgrade offers something more crucial. With greater power has come greater driveability – not to mention a new six-speed manual gearbox. Read our road test to find out more.
  • Fiat 500 MPV – We’ve got the scoop on Fiat’s forthcoming family car headed for India. It’s a seven-seat version of the 500L, which in turn is a taller, longer take on the retro-chic 500 hatchback, and could bring that all-important desirability factor to this practical segment.
  • VW Jetta 1.4 TSI – In these times of skyrocketing petrol prices, it may seem unusual to launch a new petrol engine, especially in a plush executive car. But that’s just what VW has done, and we stretch this new high-tech engine’s legs on empty Mumbai streets to see if it can make it in today’s diesel-happy market.
  • Great car, great road – Could Jaguar’s XKR coupĂ© be the perfect grand tourer for India? We take it on an exhilarating drive through Gujarat, with a small stop-off at the Little Rann of Kutch, to put it to the test.
  • Mahindra Thar AC – For all its rugged goodness, the Thar lacked a few creature comforts to make it a proper everyday-driver. Mahindra has given it a few helpful updates, and one big one – an air-conditioner – to make it more appealing.
  • Lamborghini Miura SVs – 43 years ago, the Lamborghini Miura starred in one of the most famous scenes of one of the most famous car movies of all time – The Italian Job. We take a drive down the fabled route in three Miura SVs to see if we can relive the magical moment (minus the devastating crash, of course).
  • Hero Maestro – With Hero MotoCorp’s existing Pleasure scooter tailored primarily to female buyers, the company has now launched the Maestro – aimed at wooing the men. We give this 109cc scooter the full road test treatment.
  • Husqvarna Nuda 900R – BMW is bringing the Husqvarna motorcycle brand to India, and we swing a leg around the company’s debut offering, the wildly styled Nuda 900R. Read our first impressions of the intimidating but thrilling motorcycle.
Motorsport – This month we drive two Indian tin-top racers, the petrol-powered Polo R Cup TSI and Toyota’s all-new Etios EMR, on the track. Plus, a look at the role of the third driver in a Formula 1 team during the first

VW JETTA TSI DRIVEN
THE FUEL MONTY
In times of sky-rocketing petrol prices (you've heard this one before?), Volkswagen India has decided that it's rather fuel-efficient Jetta needs a petrol sibling. It's 1.4-litre turbo-petrol, no less, but is this what the market really wants? You'll find out, once you've read our driving impression of the Jetta TSI. Or maybe not, since we're petrolheads...
